Kuchler Row, Sacramento
historic place
Kuchler Row, located in Sacramento, California, is a historic place constructed between 1872 and 1873. These two structures represent the earliest documented appearance of the apartment building concept in Sacramento. Each building originally contained four separate apartment units, providing housing for working families. Kuchler Row was designed in the Delta type architectural style. This style features a raised second floor, a design choice made to protect the main living spaces from the floodwaters that regularly affected Sacramento until the 1890s. The buildings are situated in the Alkali Flat neighborhood, which is Sacramento's second oldest. Kuchler Row documents the social and architectural evolution of the city, marking a shift in Alkali Flat from a neighborhood of mansions to one serving a working-class population. Its design also incorporates elements of Greek Revival and Italianate styles.
