Libby, McNeill and Libby Fruit and Vegetable Cannery, Sacramento
historic place
The Libby, McNeill and Libby Fruit and Vegetable Cannery was a significant industrial site in Sacramento, California. The Chicago-based company, Libby, McNeill and Libby, built nine brick structures here in 1912. The cannery, costing one million dollars, officially opened in July 1913. Located near Stockton Boulevard and what is now Alhambra Boulevard, the facility was strategically positioned. It had direct access to both the Southern Pacific and Sacramento Northern railroads, which facilitated the transport of produce and canned goods. At its peak, the cannery employed around 1,000 workers, processing various fruits and vegetables. In 1921, employment reached 1,400 people. Operations at the Libby, McNeill and Libby cannery ceased in the early 1980s. The complex was later redeveloped into an office park. This site is recognized for its historical importance, having been added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 2, 1982. It represents a key part of Sacramento's industrial past.
