Merchants National Bank of Sacramento
historic place
The Merchants National Bank of Sacramento is a historic place in Sacramento, California. The building was constructed in 1921. Architect H. H. Winner designed it in the later Classical Revival style. This architectural approach was transitional, evolving towards modernism with abstracted and minimized classical detailing. The building is rectangular, with two stories above ground and a full basement. Its exterior features a granite base and a surface of granite and cement plaster. The bank was initially envisioned to provide loans for significant industrial projects. In a 1923 history of Sacramento County, it was described as "one of the handsomest bank-homes in the city". By 1949, it was recognized as Sacramento's oldest surviving bank. The Merchants National Bank of Sacramento building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 16, 1996. Its distinctive design and long-standing role in the city's financial landscape mark its historical importance.
