Nisei VFW Post 8985, Sacramento

historic place

Sacramento's Nisei VFW Post 8985 was founded in 1947 by Japanese-American World War II veterans. They formed their own post after existing VFW organizations denied them membership due to discrimination. The post's clubhouse at 1515 Fourth Street, built in 1951, was purchased in 1955 for Post 8985. This building is the last remaining property of Sacramento's historic Japantown. A historical marker details Japantown's history and the Japanese American internment. Designated a historic landmark in 2021 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020, this site documents the experiences of Japanese American veterans and their community.
