Ruhstaller Building, Sacramento

historic place

The Ruhstaller Building, a historic commercial structure in downtown Sacramento, was built in 1898. Located at 900 J Street, this building was constructed for Frank Ruhstaller, a Swedish immigrant and a significant figure in Sacramento's brewing industry. It served as the offices for his Ruhstaller Brewery and also as headquarters for the Buffalo Brewing Company, which Ruhstaller managed. The building exhibits a Queen Anne Victorian architectural style, incorporating elements of Classical Revival and Romanesque Revival. It is constructed of brick and faced with concrete, stone, and tile. Notably, the Ruhstaller Building featured an early form of air conditioning, utilizing water pumped from the Sacramento River. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 1982. Today, the building houses offices and retail spaces. The Ruhstaller Building stands as a representation of Sacramento's industrial heritage and its historical brewing legacy.
