Sacramento City Library

historic place

The Sacramento City Library, a historic place in Sacramento, California, has a history rooted in the Sacramento Library Association, established in October 1857 as a subscription library. In 1879, it transitioned to become a free public library. The current Italian Renaissance Revival style building, located on I Street, opened in 1918. It was designed by architect Loring P. Rixford and replaced an earlier library structure from 1872. The construction of this significant building was largely funded by a $100,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie. In 1992, the Sacramento City Library was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This site reflects the evolution of public library services in Sacramento and stands as an example of early 20th-century public architecture.
