Sacramento Masonic Temple
historic place
The Sacramento Masonic Temple, located on J Street in downtown Sacramento, is a notable historic place. Construction of this five-story concrete building began in 1913, with its cornerstone formally laid on September 7, 1918. Architect Rudolph Herold designed the temple, showcasing Beaux Arts and Renaissance Revival architectural styles. The building's exterior is distinguished by its face brick and elaborate patterned terra cotta. At the main entry, two full-size terra cotta figures, representing medieval Knights Templar, stand as guardians. The interior preserves an original Otis elevator, which is reputedly the first of its kind in Sacramento and remains operational. The Sacramento Masonic Temple was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Since its completion in 1918, this building has served as a significant venue for numerous community events and gatherings. It remains one of downtown Sacramento's most intact architectural period pieces from the early 20th century.
