The Old Tavern, Sacramento

historic place

The Old Tavern, also known as the Sacramento Brewery, is a historic building located at 2801 Capitol Avenue in Sacramento, California. The site's first structure was built by John Sutter, likely for storage, after he constructed Sutter's Fort nearby. In the early 1850s, Philip Scheld expanded the building into a two-story structure and established Scheld's Sacramento Brewery. The Old Tavern has operated as a business since at least 1850. During its time as a tavern, it was a widely known landmark and a frequent stopping point for stagecoaches heading into downtown Sacramento. Over the years, the building served various purposes, including a speakeasy, apartments, and a data-processing center. Its current Tudor Revival architectural style dates to a substantial remodeling in the early 1920s. The Old Tavern was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 15, 1983. In the mid to late 1980s, the building was renovated to house an Italian restaurant and medical offices. This site represents a continuous thread of commerce and community gathering in Sacramento for over a century.
