Thomas Jefferson School, Sacramento, California

historic place

The Thomas Jefferson School, a historic place in Sacramento, California, is located in Sacramento County. The original Jefferson School building was constructed in 1870. However, the structure that stands today was built in 1922. This building is an architecturally significant example of the Tudor Revival style. It was designed by E.C. Hemmings, Chairman of the Sacramento School District's Architectural and Engineering Commission, and James S. Dean of the local firm Dean & Dean. The school served students for over two decades, with the 1948-1949 school year being the last time students attended classes at this site. Following its use as a school, the building was converted into administrative offices in 1949. It functioned in this capacity until 2009, when it was repurposed for storage. The Thomas Jefferson School is recognized for its distinctive Tudor Revival architecture, featuring steeply pitched roof forms, brick and stucco cladding, and decorative chimneys. This site represents a notable period of school construction and architectural design in Sacramento's history.
