Travelers' Hotel, Sacramento
historic place
The Travelers' Hotel, at 428 J Street in Sacramento, California, opened in May 1914. Designed by Cuff & Diggs, it was considered a modern hotel on the Pacific Coast. Its six-story, E-shaped design allowed all 226 rooms to face outside. This style, inspired by San Francisco's St. Francis Hotel, earned it the nickname "the little St. Francis." An early concrete and steel building, it featured advanced amenities like Sacramento's first central vacuum system and an ice water circulating system to every room. The hotel operated for decades, closing in the late 1970s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This site illustrates early 20th-century hotel architecture and innovation in Sacramento.
