Winters House, Sacramento
historic place
The Winters House, located in Sacramento, California, is a historic place. It was built in 1890 by Herman Winters, a wealthy merchant and German immigrant. The house exemplifies the Victorian era Stick/Eastlake Queen Anne architectural style. It stands as one of the largest houses of this type remaining in Sacramento. The Winters House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 25, 1999. Originally, the house was constructed on what was then the outskirts of Sacramento. This area later developed into a residential neighborhood, now known as Midtown. After Herman Winters' death, his widow, Effie Winters, had the house elevated around two feet in 1909. This created a lower flat. In 1923, a bathroom and kitchen were added, converting the lower level into two apartments. The Winters House is historically significant for its architectural style and its representation of Sacramento's 19th-century development.
