Nathaniel Brittan Party House

historic place

The Nathaniel Brittan Party House, located at 125 Dale Avenue in San Carlos, California, was built in 1872. Nathaniel Jones Brittan, an early settler in San Carlos, constructed this notable residence. He was also a co-founder of the Bohemian Club of San Francisco in 1872, later serving as its president in 1892. Brittan built this house specifically to entertain his club friends and to serve as a hunting lodge. It functioned as a private retreat and entertainment venue for these gatherings. This two-and-a-half-story redwood structure is a distinct example of the Octagon Mode architectural style. It features steep gables and an octagonal windowed cupola. The house is recognized as one of the few remaining examples of 19th-century octagonal residences in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Nathaniel Brittan Party House was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. This site remains significant for its unique architecture and its direct association with Nathaniel Brittan and the Bohemian Club.
