Chaplain's House, San Diego

historic place

The Chaplain's House in San Diego, California, is a historic place. It was built in 1896 and first occupied in 1897. This structure is the last remaining building of the St. Joseph's Sanitarium, a hospital founded in 1890 by the Sisters of Mercy. The house is recognized for its architectural importance, showcasing a late 19th-century vernacular cottage design with Stick-Style and Queen Anne elements. Due to the extension of Washington Street, the Chaplain's House was moved approximately a block and a half in 1920, and then another fifteen feet in 1922. It is designated as a City of San Diego Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Chaplain's House stands as a tangible link to San Diego's early medical and architectural history.
