Fleming, Guy and Margaret, House

historic place

The Guy and Margaret Fleming House, a historic place in San Diego County, was built in 1927. Guy L. Fleming and his father constructed this two-story, wood-framed home in the Pueblo Revival style. Guy Fleming was a naturalist and park custodian, known as the "Father of Torrey Pines Reserve." He played a key role in developing the Torrey Pines Preserve into a State Reserve. The house served as the preserve's Park Administration Office from 1927 to 1932. Later, from 1933 to 1948, it became the first official headquarters for the California State Park's Southern California District. Margaret Fleming, Guy's wife, was a landscape artist and naturalist. She was also a noted conservationist. The Margaret Fleming Nature Trail in the Torrey Pines Reserve Extension Area is named in her honor. The Guy and Margaret Fleming House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in June 1998. Today, the house continues its service as a residence for a park ranger within the reserve. This site is historically significant for its association with the Flemings and the development of the Torrey Pines State Reserve.
