Georgia Street Bridge--Caltrans Bridge

historic place

The Georgia Street Bridge, a historic place in San Diego County, spans University Avenue. The initial cut for a streetcar line through the ridge at Georgia Street was made in 1907. This development allowed for the eastward extension of streetcar service, which opened new areas for suburban growth in San Diego. The current reinforced concrete bridge was completed in 1914. It features a Romanesque spandrel arch design, incorporating Mission Revival styling. Local civil engineer James R. Comly designed this structure. The bridge was also designed to complement the Panama-California Exposition at nearby Balboa Park. Between 1914 and 1948, the San Diego Electric Railway's East San Diego Trolley Line traveled beneath the bridge along University Avenue, connecting various communities. The City of San Diego Historical Resources Board designated the bridge as Historical Site Number 325 in 1994. In 1999, the Georgia Street Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This site represents a significant example of early 20th-century civil engineering in San Diego, crucial for the city's expanding transportation networks and the development of its streetcar suburbs.
