Grant, U.S. Hotel
historic place
The U.S. Grant Hotel, a historic place in San Diego, California, officially opened on October 15, 1910. This landmark was the vision of Ulysses S. Grant Jr., who built it and named it to honor his father, President Ulysses S. Grant. The new hotel replaced the earlier Horton House, which was demolished in 1905. Architect Harrison Albright designed the structure. San Diego voters contributed funds to help finance its construction. Constructed with steel and concrete, it was one of Southern California's first skyscrapers. Throughout its history, the U.S. Grant Hotel has been a significant location for civic and social events. It has hosted many notable guests, including 13 United States Presidents. In 2003, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation purchased the hotel, and it reopened in 2006 following extensive renovations. This site continues to be an important part of San Diego's historical record.
