Hawthorne Inn, San Diego

historic place

The Hawthorne Inn, located in San Diego, California, was constructed in 1900. Builders Henry Neale and R.Z. Graham completed the inn for Dr. Edward M. Butler and his wife, Jennie M. Butler. An advertisement from November 1900 described it as a high-grade family hotel with ocean and harbor views. The inn exemplifies a vernacular, or 'unschooled,' architectural style. It stands as one of San Diego's few remaining large wood-frame inns from its period. The Hawthorne Inn was designated a San Diego Historical Landmark on November 4, 1980. It was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 30, 1982. During World War II, the inn housed over one hundred Convair workers. Today, the Hawthorne Inn remains a significant example of early 20th-century San Diego architecture and lodging.
