John R. and Florence Porterfield Beardsley House

historic place

The John R. and Florence Porterfield Beardsley House is located in San Diego, California. This historic place was constructed in 1933. It stands as the first commissioned work of master builder and architect Cliff May. The house was designed and built by Cliff May and the O.U. Miracle Company. It exemplifies the Spanish Colonial or California Hacienda style ranch house. The one-story, U-shaped residence features a stucco exterior on a balloon frame and a concrete slab foundation. An interior central courtyard and an exterior veranda are notable design elements. The property was found eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C for its architecture. It is recognized as an outstanding example of Cliff May's early work. Cliff May later became known as "the father of the ranch house". The John R. and Florence Porterfield Beardsley House holds significance as a foundational example of his architectural legacy.
