La Jolla Post Office
historic place
Welcome to the La Jolla Post Office, a historic place in San Diego County. Located at 1140 Wall Street, this building was designed in 1935 by architect Louis A. Simon. Simon served as a supervising architect for the post office during the Works Progress Administration. The structure exemplifies the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style. It was constructed as part of a New Deal-era works program during the Great Depression. Inside its lobby, you can find a mural titled 'Scenic View of the Village.' This artwork, painted by artist Belle Baranceanu between 1935 and 1936, depicts a panorama of the La Jolla coastline. The mural is considered part of the building's historic designation. The La Jolla Post Office was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. It also received designations on local and state registers that same year. A plaque on the building marks this historic status. This site is historically significant as a Depression-era resource and contributes to the civic character of downtown La Jolla.
