It is considered the earliest residential building by the influential Southern California architect Irving Gill that is still standing. The house is significant due to its first owner, Major Myles Moylan. Moylan had a distinguished military career, enlisting in 1857. He fought in major Civil War battles, including Gettysburg, and later served under George A. Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Moylan retired in 1893 and settled in San Diego.
