historic place
The Walter and Judith Munk House, located at 9530 La Jolla Shores Drive in San Diego, is recognized as a historic place. The main house was constructed between 1953 and 1954, with a guest house built in 1953. Subsequent additions were made to the property through 1985. This residence was home to Dr. Walter Munk, an internationally renowned oceanographer and geophysicist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He was known for his significant work on waves, ocean temperature, and tidal energy. His research contributed to tidal predictions used during D-Day. Judith Munk, an artist and architectural designer, designed the house, its guest house, and the surrounding landscape, including two gardens and sculptures. The architecture features Modern Organic-Geometric and Post-and-Beam styles. The Munk House also served as a gathering place for scientists, intellectuals, and artists. In 2021, the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with a period of significance from 1953 to 1971. This designation acknowledges its importance in science, education, and architecture, reflecting the contributions of Walter and Judith Munk to the San Diego community and beyond.
