Portuguese Chapel of San Diego
historic place
The Portuguese Chapel of San Diego, located in the Point Loma area, is a historic place. It was completed and inaugurated in 1922 by the United Portuguese Sociedade do Espírito Santo, or UPSES. The chapel's design draws inspiration from traditional chapels found in the Azores Islands, particularly Terceira and Pico. Its interior reflects the style of 1920s tuna boat chapels, honoring the early Portuguese tuna fishing community in San Diego, many of whom helped construct it. The chapel was built to house the Crown during the annual Feast of the Holy Spirit, which remains San Diego's longest-running ethnic celebration. This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 17, 2017. The Portuguese Chapel stands as a significant architectural and cultural landmark, representing the enduring heritage of San Diego's Portuguese community.
