San Diego Rowing Club
historic place
The San Diego Rowing Club began as the Excelsior Rowing Club, formed on June 7, 1888. It officially changed its name to the San Diego Rowing Club on September 2, 1891. Its first boathouse, built in 1899 on pilings in San Diego Harbor, opened on January 1, 1900. This structure served as the club's home for 79 years. It functioned as a social center, attracting community members for rowing and other activities. In 1978, the club relocated to Mission Bay. The original boathouse was renovated, reopening as a restaurant in 1983. This historic building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The San Diego Rowing Club marks a notable part of San Diego's early recreational and social development.
