Sunnyslope Lodge, San Diego

historic place

Sunnyslope Lodge, located at 3733 Robinson Mews in San Diego, California, is a significant historic place. It was constructed in 1902 by architect Irving J. Gill. This lodge was one of twelve experimental, low-cost cottages Gill built between 1900 and 1908. Here, Gill developed innovative techniques for flush detailing, slab doors, and thin-wall construction. His goal was to create affordable, dignified housing for workingmen's families. Sunnyslope Lodge represents an early example of Gill's minimalist architectural style, which is considered one of the few original styles in the United States. The single-story, wood-frame residence was designed in a vernacular Mexican style. It featured a small square tower that originally housed the water tank. Sunnyslope Lodge was designated a San Diego Historical Landmark in 1998 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It stands as an important example of early 20th-century innovative architecture in San Diego.
