Teacher Training School Building--San Diego State Normal School

historic place

This is the Teacher Training School Building in San Diego, California. Completed in 1910, it was part of the San Diego State Normal School, established in 1897 to train elementary school teachers. The main Normal School building, designed by William S. Hebbard and Irving Gill, opened in 1899. Civil engineer Nathan Ellery designed this Teacher Training Building, also known as Annex No. 1, in the Italian Renaissance Revival style. It functioned as a practical laboratory for student teachers. The institution became San Diego State Teachers College in 1921 and relocated in 1931. The original Normal School building was demolished in the mid-1950s. This 1910 Teacher Training School Building is the only remaining structure from the original campus, marking its historical significance.
