Torrey Pines Lodge
historic place
Torrey Pines Lodge is a historic place located in San Diego County. It was constructed in 1923, financed by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. Architects Richard Requa and Herbert Jackson designed the lodge in a Pueblo Revival, Spanish colonial style. The lodge first opened as a restaurant, serving as a roadside stop for travelers on the Pacific Coast Highway. It later became a canteen during World War II. Today, it functions as the visitor center for Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. The lodge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on June 18, 1998. A historical marker at the site states: 'Torrey Pines Lodge 1923. Has Been Listed in the National Register of Historic Places Department of Interior 18 June 1998.' This site highlights San Diego's early tourism and conservation efforts.
