APOLLO (Storeship)
historic place
The APOLLO Storeship is a historic place in San Francisco, California. In January 1850, the packet ship Apollo was converted into a storeship and beached on the San Francisco waterfront mudflats, near today's Sacramento and Battery Streets. A two-story structure built over her decks housed various businesses, including the Apollo Saloon. On May 4, 1851, a fire destroyed the Apollo. The burned hulk was then covered by sand as the city expanded. Portions of the Apollo were uncovered during 20th-century construction, revealing parts of the hull and Gold Rush artifacts. The APOLLO Storeship was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Today, the ship's remains lie beneath the old Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, a tangible link to the city's Gold Rush development.
