Beach Chalet, San Francisco
historic place
The Beach Chalet, a historic place in San Francisco County, was erected in 1925. Architect Willis Polk designed this Spanish Revival-style building as a city-run restaurant and bathing facility. From 1936 to 1937, the ground floor received frescoes, mosaics, and wood carvings. These Works Progress Administration artworks depict San Francisco life; Lucien Labaudt painted the frescoes. During World War II, the U.S. Army used the building for coastal defense. It became a San Francisco City Landmark in 1985 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. After restoration, it reopened in the mid-1990s. This site preserves a segment of San Francisco's public and artistic history.
