Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation Hospital

historic place

The Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation Hospital, located in San Francisco, California, is a historic place with a notable past. This impressive concrete building, designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style by architect Frederick H. Meyer, was constructed in 1916. It served as a company hospital for employees of Bethlehem's Union Iron Works shipyard, primarily treating workers injured in industrial accidents. At the time, Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation operated San Francisco's largest shipyard. In 1931, the hospital closed and was sold. It was later acquired by the Kaiser-Permanente Foundation in 1948, becoming their first full-service hospital in San Francisco. After Kaiser sold the property in 1958, it operated as a convalescent hospital until 2013. In 2020, the building was converted into apartments. The Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation Hospital stands as a tangible link to San Francisco's industrial and medical history.
