Building at 1735--1737 Webster Street
historic place
The building at 1735-1737 Webster Street in San Francisco is a notable historic place, also known as the Vollmer House. It was constructed around 1876, though some records suggest a period extending to 1885. This structure was designed by the Newsom Brothers, Samuel and Joseph Cather Newsom. They created it in the flamboyant Stick-Eastlake architectural style, known for its outstanding decorative exterior details. The original owner was F. Vollerni, and the building primarily served as a rental property. It was initially located at 773 Turk Street and famously survived the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fires. In 1974, the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency relocated the building to its current address on Webster Street. The building was designated a California Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 8, 1973. Its continued existence highlights the architectural heritage of San Francisco's Victorian era.
