Building at 1813--1813B Sutter Street

historic place

This is the building at 1813-1813B Sutter Street in San Francisco. This Italianate style structure was built in 1876. It originally stood at 1624 Post Street, where it was constructed as a rental property by the Gantzer family. The building notably survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. In 1973, the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency moved this historic building to its current Sutter Street location. This relocation was a preservation effort for Victorian homes during the development of Japantown and the Japan Center Mall. On March 8, 1973, the building was officially listed as a California Historical Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places. Over its history, the building has served various purposes, including a commercial store, a Bonsai store, and a Japanese church. Its history reflects San Francisco's architectural preservation efforts and the evolution of its Japantown neighborhood.
