Buon Gusto Sausage Factory

historic place

Here in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood stands the Buon Gusto Sausage Factory, located at 535 Green Street. This building was completed in 1948. It was designed by architect Martin J. Rist for owner Federico Casissa. From 1948 until 1978, three generations of the Casissa family manufactured Italian specialty meats here, including salami and salcicce. Buon Gusto was one of only two San Francisco purveyors to undergo federal USDA inspections, allowing sales across state lines. The building is an intact example of International/Modern architecture, featuring simple details and red, green, and white striping. Original signage and an analog clock with neon letters remain. The Buon Gusto Sausage Factory is a direct visual link to North Beach's Italian heritage during the 20th century. It is the last remaining building in the area designed for meat production from that era. On February 1, 2021, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This site preserves a tangible connection to San Francisco's Italian culinary history.
