Burr House

historic place

The Burr House, also known as Burr Mansion, is located at 1772 Vallejo Street in San Francisco's Cow Hollow neighborhood. This historic place was built between 1875 and 1878. It was commissioned by Ephraim Willard Burr, the eighth mayor of San Francisco and a prominent banker. Burr intended the house as a wedding gift for his son, Edmond Coffin Burr, and his fiancé, Anna Barnard. Architect Edmund M. Wharf designed the residence in an Italianate style, featuring a French Second Empire mansard roof. The Burr House stands on one of the city's largest land parcels, encompassing over a quarter of an acre. It notably survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, though it reportedly slipped off its foundations. The Burr House was designated a San Francisco Landmark on May 3, 1970. It was later added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 8, 2015. This property represents a significant example of 19th-century residential architecture in San Francisco.
