Bush Street-Cottage Row Historic District
historic place
The Bush Street-Cottage Row Historic District in San Francisco is a residential enclave. It comprises 20 to 22 historical homes, a walkway, and a small park. These two-story wood-frame buildings, built between 1870 and 1885, showcase Italianate and early Stick architectural styles. Developers like The Real Estate Associates and Colonel Charles L. Taylor contributed to its creation, with Colonel Taylor naming "Cottage Row." The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a California Historical Landmark in December 1982. It became a San Francisco Designated Landmark in September 1991. In the 1930s, Cottage Row was known as "Japan Street" due to its Japanese-American residents. They cultivated vegetables in their yards and held a weekly market. This district offers an intact example of late 19th-century San Francisco housing.
