Coit Memorial Tower
historic place
Coit Memorial Tower, a historic place in San Francisco, California, stands in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood. It was built between 1932 and 1933, and dedicated on October 8, 1933. The tower's construction was made possible by Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who in 1929 bequeathed one-third of her estate to the city for beautification. Architects Arthur Brown Jr. and Henry Temple Howard designed the 210-foot tower in the Art Deco style. Inside, twenty-five frescoes were painted between 1933 and 1934 by various artists. These murals, part of the Public Works of Art Project, depict 'Aspects of Life in California, 1934.' Coit Memorial Tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 2008. It serves as an example of Art Deco architecture and a record of Depression-era public art.
