Colombo Building

historic place

The Colombo Building, located at 1-21 Columbus Avenue in San Francisco, was completed in 1913. Architects James and Merritt Reid designed this two-story commercial structure. Financier Elise A. Drexler commissioned the building. Drexler was a pioneering female investor who advanced women's property rights through a 1916 California Supreme Court ruling. Its Classical Revival style reflects post-1906 earthquake reconstruction. The building was designated San Francisco Landmark Number 237 in 2002 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. It stands as an example of early 20th-century commercial architecture and its connection to women's historical roles in San Francisco.
