Dallam-Merritt House

historic place

The Dallam-Merritt House, located in San Francisco, is a notable historic place. Constructed around 1870, it showcases a blend of Second Empire and Italianate architectural styles. Its distinctive Mansard roof is a particularly remarkable feature. The house was originally built for Richard B. Dallam, a prominent manufacturer, at 528 Sutter Street. In 1900, the house was moved to its current address on Washington Street by its new owners, Dr. George Washington Merritt and Dr. Emma Sutro Merritt. Dr. Emma Sutro Merritt was a significant figure as an early woman physician and the daughter of former San Francisco mayor Adolph Sutro. This relocation proved crucial. Many luxury residences built around 1870 were destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. The Dallam-Merritt House survived because it had been moved outside the fire's path. It stands today as one of the few remaining examples of such homes from that era. The Dallam-Merritt House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 19, 1984.
