Doolan, Richard P., Residence and Storefronts

historic place

The Richard P. Doolan Residence and Storefronts is a historic place in San Francisco County, located at the prominent corner of Haight and Ashbury Streets. This Colonial Revival style house was constructed in 1903 as the personal residence of Richard P. Doolan, and was designed by Frank T. Doolan. A year after the 1906 earthquake and fire, Richard Doolan raised the building in 1907. This modification created retail spaces beneath the residence and added a separate row of storefronts to the west. These two buildings have housed a wide variety of shops through the years. Holcombe Jewelers was a long-term tenant, occupying the corner space from 1937 to 1988. Notably, between 1965 and 1968, 1510 Haight Street housed the mod clothing boutique, Mnasidika, recognized as one of the first hippie shops in San Francisco. The Doolan Residence and Storefronts was designated a San Francisco Landmark on July 14, 2006. It was also listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. This site is significant for its architectural adaptation and its direct connection to the cultural history of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, particularly the rise of the hippie movement.
