Engine House No. 31
historic place
Engine House No. 31 stands in San Francisco's Russian Hill neighborhood. This historic place was constructed in 1908. City Architect Newton J. Tharp designed the building. Its architectural style combines Tudor Revival and Craftsman elements. Engine House No. 31 was one of the last San Francisco firehouses built to accommodate horse-drawn equipment. It served as an active fire station from 1908 until 1952, when it was decommissioned due to city budget cuts. The building was later purchased by philanthropist Louise Davies. In 1988, Engine House No. 31 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also recognized as San Francisco Landmark 220. The site matters historically as an example of early 20th-century firehouse architecture and its role in the city's fire protection history.
