Fleishhacker, Delia, Memorial Building

historic place

The Delia Fleishhacker Memorial Building, also known as the Mother's Building, is a historic place in San Francisco. Erected in 1925, Herbert and Mortimer Fleishhacker commissioned it to honor their late mother. Architect George W. Kelham designed this Italian Renaissance Revival building, located within the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens. It originally served as a lounge for mothers with small children, excluding boys over six until the 1970s. The building features Works Progress Administration-era murals and mosaics from 1933 to 1938. It became the Zoo's visitor center in the 1970s. The Delia Fleishhacker Memorial Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and designated a San Francisco Landmark in 2022. This site is significant for its architecture, its original social purpose, and its artistic elements.
