Folger Coffee Company Building
historic place
The Folger Coffee Company Building is a historic place in San Francisco County. It was constructed in 1904 at 101 Howard Street in the Financial District. Designed in the Renaissance Revival style by architect Henry A. Schulze, the building served as the headquarters for J. A. Folger & Company. It functioned as office space, a processing plant, and a warehouse for the coffee company. A notable aspect of the building is its resilience; it survived both the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. This was due to its foundation, which rests on wooden pilings driven deep into San Francisco Bay fill. The Folger Coffee Company occupied the building until 1963. The Folger Coffee Company Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 21, 1996. It stands as a significant example of early 20th-century commercial architecture and engineering in San Francisco.
