Glen Park BART Station
historic place
The Glen Park BART Station, located in San Francisco County, began service on November 5, 1973. This underground station was designed by architect Ernest Born and the firm Corlett + Spackman. It stands as a significant example of Brutalist architecture, known for its use of exposed concrete. Ernest Born also played a role in the graphic design for the entire BART system. The station's design incorporates high ceilings and large glazed openings, which allow natural light to reach the platform level. Its dramatic volume, particularly at the escalator wells, showcases the full height of the structure. Many consider the Glen Park station to be the architectural 'crown jewel' of the BART system. In 2019, it was nominated for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its importance as a distinctive 1960s-era rail station and a notable work by Ernest Born. This designation acknowledges its architectural and historical value.
