Goodman Building, San Francisco

historic place

The Goodman Building, located at 1117 Geary Boulevard in San Francisco, is a historic place. It was constructed around 1860, possibly as four Victorian houses. Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, the building was remodeled into a residential hotel to address the city's housing shortage. In the 1960s and early 1970s, the Goodman Building became known as a significant artist community. Notable residents during this period included singer Janis Joplin and poster artist Wes Wilson. In the 1970s, the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency intended to demolish the building. However, the artist commune, known as the Goodman Group, successfully advocated for its preservation. The Goodman Building was designated a San Francisco Landmark on February 28, 1975, and added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 18, 1975. Its landmark status recognizes its cultural value as an artist community, rather than its architectural style.
