Hale Brothers Department Store (Boundary Increase)

historic place

This is the site of the Hale Brothers Department Store in San Francisco. Hale Brothers was a significant regional retailer. Their main San Francisco store, a neoclassical building designed by the Reid Brothers, opened on October 31, 1912, at 901 Market Street. This six-story structure served as a central retail hub. The 'Boundary Increase' refers to additional buildings constructed between 1924 and 1926. These included a ten-story building at 36 Fifth Street and twin eight-story structures on Stevenson Street. They functioned as warehouses, offices, and a grocery store, supporting the main department store. These supporting buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places district in 2001. This expanded designation highlights the complete historical footprint of this important San Francisco commercial complex.
