Hobart Building, San Francisco
historic place
The Hobart Building in San Francisco, California, is a historic place erected in 1914. Its historical marker text notes, 'Hobart Building, A San Francisco Landmark, Constructed 1914, Willis Polk, Architect.' This twenty-one-story structure was designed by Willis Polk. It replaced a previous building damaged by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fires. The Hobart Building showcases the French Renaissance Revival style, characterized by its sculpted terra cotta exterior and Baroque ornamentation. At its completion, it was the second tallest building in the city. The building's distinctive shape was influenced by its asymmetrical polygonal site. The City of San Francisco designated the Hobart Building as a landmark in 1983. In 2021, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Hobart Building stands as an example of San Francisco's architectural resilience and style during its early 20th-century reconstruction.
