House at 1239--1245 Scott Street

historic place

The House at 1239-1245 Scott Street in San Francisco is recognized as a historic place. This Italianate Victorian building was constructed in 1882. It was built for John J. Dowling, a contractor. The building was originally located at 1356-62 Scott Street. In 1973, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A year later, in 1974, the house was moved to its current address. This relocation was part of an effort to preserve the building from demolition due to urban redevelopment and zoning changes in the Western Addition area. The structure is notably wide, having been two buildings joined by a common party wall, and required separation for its move. Today, it contributes to a row of Italianate Victorian residences on Scott Street. Its listing in 1973 made it one of San Francisco's earliest properties recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
