House at 1249--1251 Scott Street
historic place
The House at 1249-1251 Scott Street is a historic Italianate Victorian residence in San Francisco. Constructed in 1868, it stands on the corner of Scott and Ellis Streets. This house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This designation was part of a critical effort to save numerous Victorian homes from demolition. The San Francisco Redevelopment Agency's urban renewal, often termed 'slum clearance,' threatened many historic structures in the Western Addition neighborhood. To preserve it, the house was physically moved from its original location, one block away, to its current address in 1973. This event was significant, as these residences were among the first properties in San Francisco to be added to the National Register. The House at 1249-1251 Scott Street therefore represents both a specific architectural style and a pivotal moment in the city's historical preservation efforts.
