Jackson Brewing Company

historic place

Here in San Francisco, we observe the historic site of the Jackson Brewing Company. Founded in 1859 by Thomas E. Green and Jacob Lynn, the company was under the ownership of the William A. Fredericks family from 1867 until 1920. Initially situated on First Street, the company purchased property at Folsom and 11th Streets in 1905. Construction for a new brewery began there, but the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fire destroyed the partially completed buildings. A new brewery complex, designed in the Romanesque Revival style, was completed in 1912. The Jackson Brewing Company operated at this location until 1920, when it closed due to the onset of Prohibition. This significant complex is designated as San Francisco Landmark number 199 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. It represents one of the city's few surviving turn-of-the-century brewing complexes and now functions as a mixed-use development. The site provides a direct connection to San Francisco's early commercial brewing heritage.
