McMullen, John, House
historic place
The John McMullen House, located at 827 Guerrero Street in San Francisco, was originally built in 1881. It was first constructed in the Stick Style. John McMullen, a carpenter and builder, arrived in San Francisco in 1876. He established the San Francisco Bridge Company in 1877. McMullen became a significant contractor in the West, involved in projects like dredging Oakland Harbor and building bridges. In 1890, architect Samuel Newsom extensively altered the house. These changes included widening the structure, adding a tower, extending it to the rear, and creating a basement. The alterations transformed the house into a Queen Anne style, reflecting the up-to-the-minute fashion of the 1890s. The John McMullen House is recognized as San Francisco Landmark number 123. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is considered a superb example of Queen Anne styling and illustrates the evolution of domestic architecture in San Francisco during the late 19th century. In 1983 and 1984, the house underwent restoration to become a group home for low-income adults. This project received a California Preservation Foundation Design Award in 1985.
