Mish House
historic place
The Mish House, a historic place in San Francisco, is located at 1153 Oak Street in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. This residence was built in 1885. Architects McDougall and Sons designed it in the Stick-Eastlake style. The house was originally constructed for Phenes and Sarah Mish, early San Francisco pioneers. Sarah Mish was a prominent businesswoman, running a successful dressmaking and millinery business. Phenes Mish was a dry goods merchant and president of Congregation Sherith Israel. Initially at 407 Divisadero Street, the Mish House moved to its current Oak Street site in 1889. Later, it was converted into apartments in 1929. A local preservation group restored the house in 1975. The Mish House became a San Francisco Landmark in 1974 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This site matters historically for its architecture and its connection to an important early San Francisco family.
